A Day at La Hacienda Links: Golfing with a View in Sotogrande, Spain

Embarking on an adventure that blends sports with scenic beauty, we, two novice globetrotters, found ourselves at the majestic La Hacienda Links just outside of Sotogrande, Spain. Our journey isn’t just about ticking off destinations but experiencing them in unique ways. Though not avid golfers, the lure of playing 18 holes with the Mediterranean Sea, Gibraltar, and Morocco as our backdrop was too captivating to resist. This article details our experience at La Hacienda Links, offering insights not just for golf enthusiasts but for anyone seeking a day of leisure in a picturesque setting.

Initial Impressions and Cost

Stepping through the grand front doors of La Hacienda Links, an air of opulence greeted us. An infinite pool leading up to the first tee created a serene and inviting atmosphere. We warmed up with a complimentary bucket of balls at the driving range, a much-needed refresher given our years-long hiatus from golf.

The cost to play 18 holes of golf at La Hacienda Links €443 in total for two people, which includes two sets of club rentals and a golf cart. The cost of the green fees on a weekday at La Hacienda was €180 per person.

Course Overview

A standout feature of La Hacienda Links is its gentle slopes that gracefully descend towards the sea, culminating in a stunning beach. This unique topography means that players can enjoy an ever-changing landscape as they progress through the course. Running along almost two kilometers of breathtaking coastline, a significant number of holes are situated right on the beach, offering unparalleled views and an immersive golfing experience.

The first time you get to play alongside the beach and sea is the par 5, hole 5. This picture is from behind the tees.

The recent renovation of La Hacienda Links has transformed it into a marvel of golf architecture, elevating its status among Europe’s finest courses. The course’s layout is a masterclass in design, featuring wide fairways that invite players to unleash powerful drives. The double greens add a layer of complexity and strategic depth, demanding careful consideration with every putt. La Hacienda Links boasts one of the largest putting-surface areas in Spain, presenting a delightful challenge to golfers of all levels. Large, strategically located bunkers are placed throughout the course, ready to challenge your accuracy and decision-making skills.

The above picture is Hole 9, a par 4 that requires a strong drive to clear the creek and trees to land safely on the fairway. That safety doesn’t last long if you don’t have good aim as the magnificently manicured bunkers offer another challenge to make it to the green.

The Sal Verde Calma Bar: A Mid-Course Oasis

The crown jewel of our experience was undoubtedly the Sal Verde Calma Bar, nestled between the 9th and 10th holes. Perched at the highest elevation of the course, this haven offered panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea, Gibraltar, and Morocco. It was more than a refreshment stop; it was a moment to soak in the beauty surrounding us. With comfortable seating both indoors and out, an extensive selection of beers and wines, delicious lunch options, and clean washrooms, it was the perfect interlude to our game.

Refreshments and Amenities

While we missed the opportunity to dine at the clubhouse restaurant, we appreciated the convenience of grabbing cold beers and water before starting. The course also featured a roaming refreshment cart, and we were pleasantly surprised when staff from the clubhouse came around with complimentary water bottles – a much-needed respite in the heat. Our cart was thoughtfully stocked with water, underscoring the club’s attention to guest comfort.

The carts themselves were very modern, displaying real-time GPS tracking and course layout data. You can even use the digital scorecard instead but we opted for the old fashion paper and pencil. The carts are also speed-regulated to slow down for dangerous parts on the paths and prohibit you from going too close to the green by locking the forward movement and forcing you to reverse before releasing the pedal.

Scheduling Hiccups

Despite the impeccable setting, our game had a slightly rocky start. The course did not strictly adhere to tee times, causing a bit of congestion on the course. Before we could even finish the first hole, another group had teed off behind us, followed closely by another. This rush did detract from our experience, highlighting the importance of time management in such a prestigious environment.

Staff and Facilities

Throughout our visit, the staff’s friendliness and professionalism stood out. The change rooms were immaculate, and the provision of free lockers for our luggage was a thoughtful touch that greatly assisted us in our transitional day between hotels.

Conclusion

As inexperienced travellers and casual golfers, La Hacienda Links offered us more than just a game of golf; it presented a fusion of sport, leisure, and awe-inspiring vistas. While there were minor setbacks with scheduling, the overall experience was enriching, leaving us with memories of not just playing golf, but of immersing ourselves in the splendor of Sotogrande, Spain. Whether you’re a golf enthusiast or a traveler seeking unique experiences, La Hacienda Links promises a day filled with luxury, challenge, and unparalleled views.
